Medicine has advanced a lot due the advance of Technologies, as, for
example, the robotic. Now a days there are equipments that allow doctors
to make surgeries in pacients being in another city and even in another
continent.
This is called remote surgery, and basically, it’s
the way for a doctor to perform surgeries on patients even tough they’re
not on the same location.
This kind of surgery consists of a
robotic arm, controlled by the surgeon, a master controller and a
sensory system, giving the feedback to the user.
Today, the
currently surgical robot system is ommercially available by the Da Vinci
surgical system, which costs $ 1 million, and the cost of one operation
runs between $ 100,000 - $ 200,000.
One of the first successful
remote surgeries was called The Lindbergh Operation, made by a team of
French being in New York, in a patient who was in France, on September
7, 2001.
To make this procedure possible, they had to use high
speed telecommunication services, to reduce the time delay, being the
first time that it occurred in medical history.
This high speed
transfer of voice, video and data has a maximum speed of 10 Gigabits per
second, and allows opportunities for more transatlantic surgeries,
similar to Lindbergh Operation.

Now a days, this kind of surgery is not commom, due its costs, and also bescause many countries don't use this kind of equipment, but the expectancy about this procedure is that its use it's going to be increased all over the world.
